Rights is a key strand of our Keeping The Promise improvement journey.
At a glance, these are the key areas around rights which we will be working on:
- Rights-based grounds of referral
- Contextual safeguarding training for SCRA staff
- Referrals
- Your rights (the rights of children, young people and their parents/carers
- Implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC)
In more detail…
Our Rights, Inclusion and Corporate Parenting Strategy 2021-2023 highlights the importance of children’s rights being upheld in the Children’s Hearings System. It is also vital that the child’s voice is heard and that opportunities, as well as encouragement to participate meaningfully are provided throughout the decision-making process.
Under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) every child has the right to express their views, feelings and wishes in all matters affecting them and to have their views considered and taken seriously. Therefore as part of our Keeping The Promise work, we are committed to examining how we currently engage with children and in considering what new/extra approaches could be tested to support and protect children’s rights, ensure their voices are heard and increase their meaningful participation in all the decision-making that affects their lives.
We are currently working with young people on a new suite of information about rights in the Children’s Hearings System and how they link to the UNCRC. This information will be available on our website in the spring.
