OHOV welcomed to Dundee

Our Hearings, Our Voice (OHOV) were welcomed to our recently revamped Hearings Centre in Dundee on Wednesday.

Emma and Lisa, two of the board members, were joined by Amy Miskimmin-Logan, OHOV Participation Worker and Karen Kruszewski, SCRA’s Corporate Parenting Manager, for a presentation to a multi-agency audience.

The presentation focused on their online interactive guide ‘Seeing Beyond the Surface – what young people wish all adults knew’ which was launched a year ago.

The guide was developed by children and young people with lived experience of care from across Scotland. The guide explores six important themes:

  • Relationships
  • Support
  • Language
  • Seeing children’s potential without judgement
  • Children’s stories and personal information
  • Participation in decisions that affect their lives

More than a written guide, Seeing Beyond the Surface is brought to life through powerful artwork, poetry, videos, and voice recordings created by young people to share what matters most to them.

During the workshop, partners reflected on many of the issues raised in the guide, particularly the impact of the language used within the Children’s Hearings System.

They also got to enjoy some of the thought provoking art work created by OHOV board members.

Karen Kruzewski, SCRA’s Corporate Parenting Manager said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to Emma and Lisa for coming along to Dundee and for delivering such an inspiring presentation. It was a great way to celebrate Care Experienced Week too!

“A year on from the launch of Seeing Beyond the Surface: What Children and Young People Wish All Adults Knew, its messages remain as relevant and powerful as ever. It has been incredibly positive to see a resource created by children and young people not only being shared widely, but actively influencing discussions and encouraging reflection across our work within SCRA and with partners across Scotland.

“The insight, honesty and lived experience shared by children and young people continue to challenge us, inspire us and help us keep their needs and experiences at the heart of what we do.”

It was an extra special day for OHOV board member Emma, who was celebrating her 21st birthday. Happy Birthday Emma!
