Sign Language awareness

Posted on 16th Mar 2026

During British Sign Language Week 2026, one of our Inclusion Ambassadors Fiona Blackwood has been teaching us how to finger spell the alphabet.

Fiona, a Locality Support Administrator in Glasgow, recently successfully completed the Introduction to British Sign Language course. The online SQA course was run by Deaf Action and lasted for 20 weeks between February and July 2025.

By the end of the course participants Fiona and her fellow participants were able to use sign language to:

  • Introduce themselves
  • Fingerspell and numbers
  • Talk about their family and home life, where they live and holidays
  • Provide directions
  • Talk about food and drink
  • Describe hobbies, activities and shopping

Fiona was one of 9 members of staff who undertook the course and is keen to share her learning. In this short video clip she is wishing everyone happy sign language week!

This is all part of SCRA’s commitment to provide a more accessible and inclusive service. In addition, we are committed to improving our information materials and we now have an extensive BSL section on our website which will continue to grow over time.
