Children and young people's views of the Hearings System

SCRA is today publishing three reports on children and young people’s views and experiences of the Hearings System:
- Fit For Us – making our system fit for children and young people.
- The Children’s Hearings System: understood and making a difference – young people’s views.
- Hearing Scotland’s Children – the expert views of Scotland’s children and young people on their experiences of the Children’s Hearings System.
Fit For Us – making our system fit for children and young people
SCRA’s Modern Apprentices carried out inspection visits of 23 Hearings Centres. Their report makes recommendations to improve Hearing Centres and young people’s experiences of coming to Hearings. The Children’s Hearings System: understood and making a difference – young people’s views
This research addresses the question - Does the Children’s Hearings System make a difference? SCRA worked with Aberlour Child Care Trust on research to find out if being involved in the Hearings System makes a difference to the lives of young people. In-depth interviews were carried out with 21 young people aged between 11 and 17 years on Hearings processes, the services they received and outcomes from being involved in the Hearings System. Hearing Scotland’s Children – the expert views of Scotland’s children and young people on their experiences of the Children’s Hearings System
This consultation was carried out, on behalf of SCRA, by Who Cares? Scotland with 100 children and young people involved in its services. 100 young people aged nine to 17 years completed a questionnaire either on their own or in discussion with their Who Cares? Scotland worker.
Young people made suggestions for improvements to Hearings facilities, communications and paperwork, participation and attitudes towards children’s and young people. SCRA presented the findings and recommendations from these reports to the Children’s Hearings Improvement Partnership (CHIP) on 30 September with recommendations that:

- CHIP reviews the findings from these three reports and wider evidence to set out clearly how well the Hearing System is performing from perspective of children and young people and what needs to be improved; and from this
- CHIP produces an Action Plan for improvements to the Hearings System with responsibilities allocated to relevant partner agencies.
