"Paul’s life would have

intervention by the Children’s

Hearings System.”

Paul's story

Paul came to the attention of the Children’s Hearings System for  offending and having problems at school. It was discovered that his mother was abusive towards him and she refused to co-operate with agencies.

The 12 year old was referred to the Children’s Reporter on grounds of lack of parental care, and a Hearing was about to be arranged when he was beaten by his mother in public in the presence of a number of witnesses.

The Social Work Department obtained a Child Protection Order which was continued by the Children's Hearing. At this point, Paul was too frightened to even sit in the same room as his mother.

His mother refused to accept the grounds and the matter was referred to the Sheriff Court, where the Sheriff found the grounds of referral established in full. A Children’s Hearing made a Supervision Requirement to keep Paul with foster parents. From then on Paul remained free of trouble and as he got older, decided that he no longer wanted any contact with his mother.

Paul’s life would have been very different without intervention by the Children’s Hearings System. His Supervision Requirement was terminated shortly after his 16th birthday. He had obtained qualifications from school and found a job as an apprentice joiner which he greatly enjoys. Paul told his last Hearing that he hoped to start his own business in the future.
