Hannah's Story
Hannah, who is six years old, lives at home with her mum and her little sister Lucy, who is three. Hannah's mum used to worry about things and was poorly quite a lot. When Hannah’s mum was poorly, she spent most of the day in bed. Hannah tried to look after her mum and her little sister Lucy and this meant that she missed lots of school.
One of Hannah’s school teachers became very worried about her and so contacted SCRA to let them know that she didn’t think that Hannah was being looked after properly. A Reporter called Alison asked the social worker to visit the family to see what was happening. Alison also asked the school teacher to write a report about Hannah. After this, Alison decided that Hannah and Lucy needed some help to make sure that they were being looked after properly and so they had to go to a Children’s Hearing.
Hannah went to the Hearing with her mum and her grandma came along too. Hannah’s teacher and the social worker were there too. Hannah said: “When mum gets ill, I have to look after my little sister. The people at the Hearing were worried about us as they think a grown up should be doing this stuff for us. They wanted to help make sure that we were looked after properly.”
The Panel Members at the Hearing decided that Hannah and Lucy should both go and stay with their grandma to give Hannah’s mum some time to help her sort her problems out. The Panel Members decided that Hannah should come back to another Hearing three months later to see if her mum was feeling better and able to look after them again. Although she wasn’t completely better, Hannah’s mum was well enough that Hannah and Lucy could go and stay with her at weekends. After six months they were able to stay with her again all the time.
Hannah's mum is now much better although the social worker still visits the family to make sure that Hannah and Lucy are doing OK. Hannah is really happy now and is going to school every day. Her teacher has helped her to catch up on all the things she missed when she wasn’t going to school and says that she is now doing very well in her class.
