Drew's story

Fourteen year old Drew came to the attention of the Reporter after he was caught with drugs in the school playground.

Police found Drew with five wrapped pieces of cannabis resin in his possession.

His parents were separated - he stayed with his mother and her new partner who was known to the police, and had a history of drug misuse and was suspected of dealing in drugs.

As part of the investigation process, the Reporter dealing with this case requested reports from Social Work and Education. The reports recommended that compulsory measures be considered due to the nature of the charge, and Drew’s home circumstances. The Reporter referred him to a Hearing, which he attended with his mother.

Panel Members took into account that this was his first offence and apart from this incident, he was a well behaved teenager who worked hard at school. On this occasion, the Hearing made a Supervision Requirement, with a condition attached that he attend a special drugs awareness programme for teenagers.

His mother left her partner and Drew, now 16, continues to live at home, and he has not come to the attention of the authorities again.
